RAMALLAH, August 9, 2017 (WAFA) – The demolition of Palestinian property in East Jerusalem under the pretext of unlicensed building dominated the front-page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Wednesday.

The dailies said Israeli bulldozers demolished several Palestinian homes and structures in the East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Jabal al-Mukkabir and Beit Hanina. A family of four were left homeless following the demolition of their Jabal al-Mukkabir home. The dailies also reported Israeli forces handed demolition notices for a number of structures in Silwad, a town northeast of Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida explained forces handed demolition notices in Silwad for 13 structures and a school that was built 10 years ago. Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported in its main news item that Israeli occupation authorities were paving the way for seizing the home of Shamasneh family in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard the Shamasneh family has filed a petition with an Israeli court to stop the eviction from the home they have lived in since 1964.

Khalil Tufakji, an expert on settlements, was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida saying the home will be turned over to Jewish settlers as part of a wider Israeli plan to boost Jewish settlements in the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood.

The dailies also reported Israeli artillery pounded a site in the northern besieged Gaza Strip purportedly after a rocket launched from the Strip landed in the southern Israel city of Asqalan. Al-Quds added the Israeli cabinet was scheduled to discuss on Wednesday a plan to resume the construction of the apartheid wall that would stretch from the southern Hebron hills to the Dead Sea resort of Ein Gedi.

Tufakji was quoted in al-Quds warning the plan was intended to expropriate one third of the West Bank area.

It reported Foreign Minister Riyad Malki stating the Palestinian Authority (PA) plans to submit in the coming days a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in order to upgrade its UN status to that of full member state.

It also reported the Higher Presidential Committee for Churches’ Affairs called for efforts to be consolidated in order to foil an Israeli scheme to seize Jaffa Gate area in East Jerusalem.

The committee made this call following the reported selling of church property by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem to Israeli investors. Al-Quds said the Abu Rajab family has petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court to evict settlers from their home near the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron about two weeks after settlers raided and took over the home.

It also reported the Lebanese Government was adamant to conduct a public census of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added the Palestinian cabinet deplored Israel’s request to occupy a seat on the UN Security Council. The dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas met with Sweden’s special envoy to the Middle East peace process, Per Örnéus, in Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam reported the White House stating they support a bill to cut US funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA). It added Israeli police would not face charges over the fatal shooting of a Palestinian citizen of Israel during a raid into the Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran in January.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the Palestinian Monetary Authority denying media reports that it had received instructions to stop dealings with Gaza-based banks. It added Israeli settlers torched Palestinian land planted with citrus trees in the village of Aqraba, south of Nablus.

It also reported Israeli forces raided an inspection office in the old section of Hebron in the southern West Bank. The office was reportedly opened to deal with increased violence, especially family disputes among local Palestinians.
